13:31 Chick 4 Hatches

Egg numbered 16 is the 4th to hatch today. It is an Olive Egger. If it's a girl she will lay olive colored eggs. In this video you can see how the chick pecks a ring around the egg until she can push her body straight and hatch out. You can see how very tired she is from her work. If you watch carefully you will see bits of shell pop off as she uses her egg tooth from the inside poking through the membrane and the shell. Her pecking action surprises Lilly, the chick resting next to her egg. It is such an amazing feat.

2:53 Day 18 Lockdown

Today the egg turner is removed, an extra water channel is filled to increase the humidity inside the incubator, only the eggs that show a full shadow of a chick are placed on the floor of the incubator. The incubator is then closed and will not be opened until the eggs finish hatching.

This egg began to grow, but something went wrong. There is not a live chick inside. The ring around the inside of the shell shows that the blood vessels are not attached anymore. This egg will not hatch.

I received a new candling tool and decided to recheck the eggs. If you watch each video carefully you will be able to see movement inside the eggs. We have about a week until our hatch day.

3:28 Incubation Day 1

Here we go class! It's time to put our eggs into the warm incubator and let them begin to grow. We will learn many things about chickens and what is happening inside the eggs over the next 21 days. I wonder how many of our eggs will hatch. I am going to be careful and do the best I can for our eggs. However, sometimes even when you do everything right the eggs don't hatch. That's just the way nature is sometimes. I am hopeful, though, that we will share a very successful hatch together. Enjoy the video and mark your calendar at home!
