News Updates

Hello everyone,
I know there is a lot of information swirling around out there. With that being said, I wanted to give you a couple resources for information directly from the news. Kiddos, you know CNN10 from Mondays and Fridays. I encourage you to continue to watching for solid information. Below is also a link to WTOL. I am watching the news myself and encourage you to read the articles and watch yourself. This will ensure reliable information. If you have any questions, please reach out and ask.

These kiddos have been doing some fantastic work in Social Studies! The wall next to my room is papered with the work of the 7th graders. They all drew their own Ancient Greek city-state. It looks so cool to see all their work up!

2-13-20

Attention parents:
Tomorrow the students have a busy day planned! In the morning they will present their Career Fair project to the younger students. In the afternoon, we will be rewarding awesome behavior with a movie showing and snacks. The movies that have been chosen are all to celebrate Black History Month. The movies are “The Help”, “42”, and “Hidden Figures.” If you have any concerns about these films, please let us know.
The Career Fair will continue tomorrow from 5:30-6:30pm in the evening. Attendance is optional for the students.

Attention 8th grade parents:
Please be sure your student is bringing home this permission slip. The field trip to Jones Leadership Academy is a great opportunity for the students to see another school in the area. Please have this in by Feb 7, 2020.

Week Before Break Video Viewing!

This week is an exciting one before break! The students will be presenting what they have learned in their classes on different days. In the afternoons, we have prepared showings that relate to the content presented that day.
Monday: Sons of Liberty (History Channel TV show rated PG13)
Tuesday: Arctic Dogs (Field Trip; PG)
Wednesday: Magic School Bus (G)
Thursday: Lincoln (PG13)
Though many signed our permission slip at the beginning of the year that allows your student(s) to watch PG13 movies, we wanted to be sure to share with you the titles. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Senior Shadow

Hello all,
I have a senior high school student shadowing my classes for the next few days. Here is his introduction letter:

My name is Abdulrazaq Elhag and I am a senior at Toledo Islamic Academy. At TIA, graduating seniors are required to complete a senior project on a career they are interested in. I chose to spend my year learning about careers in teaching.

Ms. Claes kindly agreed to allow me to shadow her classes during the week of Dec. 2- 6. I’m very excited for the opportunity to get to learn about what it is like to be an educator at L. Hollingworth over the course of this week, and hope that I can also lend a helping hand during my time here!

I want to make myself available to anyone who has any questions or concerns about my project or anything to do with my time at L. Hollingworth. Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] anytime.

There is a great opportunity for families here in our local area! This weekend, Jones Leadership Academy is hosting Susie's Coats. This is an opportunity to get a free winter coat for your kiddo! Please note that the person has to be present to receive a coat.
Attention 8th grade parents:
This permission slip went home with the 8th graders on Monday. It is for a field trip to Toledo Early College next Friday. This field trip is for their CCR class. It is very important that this permission slip is signed and turned back in to me or Ms. Gerwin. Please contact us if you have any questions. Thank you for your time.
These kiddos have been doing some fantastic work in Social Studies! The 8th grade achievement board from this month is up and showing work of 14 8th graders. I am so proud of the work they put in on this assignment.

Bowling Field Trip

The students did an awesome job on the field trip this past Wednesday (10-23-19)! We are so proud of you guys. Please keep up the awesome work. We have been so impressed with your behavior this quarter!

Christopher Scott Book Study CCR/ Social Studies

Dear Parents/Guardians of 7th and 8th-grade Students,

We will be doing a book study of the "7 Secrets of Surviving College" by Christopher Scott.   In this book, there is mild language.  If you would like to review the book or have your student opt out of reading this book, please contact any of your student's teachers.  Otherwise, we will assume that you have no objection to your student reading this material in class.  Additionally, there will be a presentation by Christopher Scott on November 21, 2019, from 8:15 am-9:45 am. We believe this will be a great presentation for students to attend!

Sincerely,
Rachel Gerwin
