Egg numbered 16 is the 4th to hatch today. It is an Olive Egger. If it's a girl she will lay olive colored eggs. In this video you can see how the chick pecks a ring around the egg until she can push her body straight and hatch out. You can see how very tired she is from her work. If you watch carefully you will see bits of shell pop off as she uses her egg tooth from the inside poking through the membrane and the shell. Her pecking action surprises Lilly, the chick resting next to her egg. It is such an amazing feat.

There's not any audio You can see the chick's beak moving the white membrane. The chick made the first break in the shell, the pip, on the right side of the egg. The chick continues to break the shell with it's beak in a line. The line will go almost all the way around the egg. Both the chick inside the egg and the chick outside the egg peep and chirp to each other. Can you see the little white tip of it's beak moving back and forth? Whoa!  It just pecked a chunk of shell right off and onto the the other chick. Another little piece of shell just landed on the other chick. I was trying to move the light so you could see better. If you look closely at the white membrane you can see it moving. The chick inside is working very hard.  She's working so hard she is breathing really fast. Just like when you run you breathe fast because your body is working hard. You will see the crack separate and open wider as the chick pushes to stretch out her body. The chick is all curled up inside the egg.  It's like when we have a tornado drill and you make youself small and curled up. The chick's body has grown so big it totally fills the egg.  She doesn't have room to move. As she stretches out her body, she pushes the shell apart.  The crack gets even wider. She has to rest often.  She is working hard to get out of the shell. Almost So close! Nearly there.  See how the pieces are still attached at the right side?  That's holding her in. Her wing is out!  She has long feathers on it. Resting more, she's tired. Another big push, but still not out. Some of her toes made it out. Another big push!  She's trying so hard! Now she's rolled onto her back. Her wing is out and to the side. More pushing to straighten out her body. You can see her foot again. She's breathing hard.  Her head is in the small part of the shell on the right. Her tail is in the larger part of the shell on the left. She did it!  She has hatched! A little piece of shell is on her back. Her body is still curled up, but she can breath better now. Again I moved the light to try to help you see better.  It didn't help much. She's resting.  Her beak is still tucked under her body. The other chicks come closer to see her.  She's really wet. Her feathers will dry and fluff out overnight. Now you can see her beak better. It is black with a peach tip. She has both dark and light feathers and they look pretty long. It's hard for her to control her body.  She will learn how.  By morning she'll be running and hopping.
