1G Reader Skills

Happy Wednesday, LHS!

Today's focus is for our 1G readers. The 1G reading level is all about learning Power Words!

Here is the list of 60 Power Words (sight words) that your child needs to learn while reading at the 1G level. Students must know 25 words to enter the level, and learn all 60 before moving on to 2G.

There are lots of ways to practice Power Words. Here are just a few ideas:

Sight Word Uno:

Power Words Word Find:
Cover a large piece of paper or cardboard with sight words, repeated over and over. Have your student find words, read them, and circle the words as they go.

SLAP!:
This games is for multiple players. Take turns calling out different sight words. The first person to slap the card, gets to keep it.

Under the Cup:
See directions for this game in link.

Star Sticks:
After introducing a new power words, put the word on a stick. Select a book that contains the Power Word. You may read the book to your child or along with your child. Every time you see the Power Word in the book, have the child touch the star stick to the word and read the word aloud. The more times the Power Word appears in the book, the faster they will learn the word! Don't forget to check out ARC Bookshelf for eBooks to use!

Other Resources:
Here are some additional resources you can use when you are practicing 1G skills with your student.

Take care and happy reading!
