1B Reader Skills

Happy Friday, LHS!

Today I have LOTS of resources for you to use when working with your 1B readers at home! 1B is a big jump forward in reading. Your reader will be learning tons of one-syllable words. Below are some word lists to use when you are working with your student at home. Ask your teacher for recommendations for where to start, and don't forget to check out ARC Bookshelf for some 1B eBooks!

1B Tricky Words:

1-Syllable "R" Controlled Pattern:

Chunking and Rhyming:

Long Vowel Pattern:

Other Resources:

Games and Activities:

Chunky Monkey Bookmark:
This little guy can be a bookmark to remind students to CHUNK!

R-Controlled Vowel Cards:
These are picture clued R-controlled cards. Students should be familiar with R-Controlled vowels before using these. Use them to practice and reinforce. When student is able, cover the picture and have her say the word without the visual clue, chunking if necessary. If you print enough cards, you could play Fish or Memory.

R-Controlled Vowels - Visual:
This is great visual to give 1B students or any student struggling to remember R-Control Vowel sounds. They can leave this mini sticky note in their folders to look at whenever necessary. Show student that "er", "ir", and "ur" are in a horizontal bubble and they all say the /er/ sound. (Yes, there are exceptions) The top bubble says /ar/ and the bottom bubble says /or/. It's not long before they do not need the visual.

Take care and happy reading, LHS!
