2B Reader Skills

Happy Monday, LHS!

Welcome back from Spring Break! Today's reading focus is for our 2B readers. Reading at the 2B level is all about chunking 2-syllable words -- breaking bigger words up into smaller pieces to help us figure out new words. Here are some resources to use at home when practicing our skills at the 2B level.

Student Practice Pages:
Decoding:

Chunking 2-Syllable words:

Tricky Words:

Games and Activities:
Word Sort - This one can be used to introduce the double consonant rule. Use the "I Do, We Do, You Do" format. Once student understands rule, she does the sort by herself. Be sure to ask WHY the word goes in that column. You can use words listed on the student practice page, or any other words that follow the double consonant rule.

Controlled R Visual - This is great visual to give to any student struggling to remember R-Control Vowel sounds. They can leave this mini sticky note in their folders to look at whenever necessary. Show student that "er", "ir", and "ur" are in a horizontal bubble and they all say the /er/ sound. (Yes, there are exceptions) The top bubble says /ar/ and the bottom bubble says /or/. It's not long before they do not need the visual.

Chunky Monkey Bookmark - This little guy can be a bookmark to remind students to CHUNK!

Chunking Sentence Strips - Chunking sentence strips to use with1B students bridging them to 2B. Word cards to practice chunking in 2B.
